The man has a beard and a resigned look on his face. His hunched back, knees together, and hands clasped convey the coldness of the weather. The girl's expression is tender and full of love as she looks at the man. He, on the other hand, gazes into infinity, where the viewer is located. One detail that shows how defenseless the girl is and contributes to expressing tenderness is the fact that her feet do not reach the ground. Her legs are also very close together to better protect her from the cold, but they are also directed toward the man, as if seeking his warmth.
The “cold” is not only a low temperature in this sculpture, but can also represent the bad times ahead, politically and socially, and can refer to the passage of time, to the coldness of the old man's death, in contrast to the girl's youth. The man's age, youth and old age, are themes present in the form of the two figures. The state of defenselessness they display may refer to a social message, the vindication of the working classes, which was on the rise in that year.
El hombre tiene barba y mirada de resignación. La espalda curvada, las rodillas juntas y las manos unidas transmiten el frío del tiempo. El gesto de la niña es tierno y lleno de amor, mirando el hombre. Él, en cambio mira el infinito, dónde se encuentra el espectador. Un detalle que muestra lo indefensa que se encuentra la niña y contribuye a expresar ternura es el hecho de que los pies no le lleguen al suelo. Las piernas también están muy juntas para protegerse mejor del frío, pero además están en dirección al hombre, como si buscaran su calor.
El "frío" no es únicamente una baja temperatura en esta escultura, sino que también puede representar los malos tiempos que se avecinan, política y socialmente, y puede referirse al paso del tiempo, a los fríos de la muerte del hombre mayor, respecto a la juventud de la niña. La edad del hombre, la juventud y la vejez, son temas presentes en forma de las dos figuras. El estado de indefensión que muestran puede hacer referencia a un contenido social, de reivindicación de las clases populares, que estaba en auge en aquel año.
